 Last name change on I-485

My I-140 is pending, and have applied I-485 for both me and my wife as well.
We were thinking of changing my wife's last name on green card, and subsequently on all other documents.
But looks like there are some fees regarding changing the name on the green card after the fact. So I was contemplating changing her last name before the green card was issued.

I called my lawyers, and they said its not possible, have to wait until green card is issued.
Called USCIS, they said just mail all the supporting documents and a letter with the request.

Does anyone have any experience or information regarding this?
I am feeling like i am needlessly making this more complicated. Maybe just wait till the green card is issued (if it were to be approved :D)
