India rejects Nepal Maoists' charge of interference

New Delhi, May 5 (PTI) India tonight rejected allegations by Nepal Maoists about interference, saying such comments were "unfortunate and unwarranted".
"We have never interfered in internal affairs of any neighbour... The comments in this regard are unfortunate and unwarranted," Minister of State for External Affairs Anand Sharma told PTI.

He was commenting on allegations by Nepal Maoist leaders that India was interfering in that country's affairs and at New Delhi's behest President Ram Baran Yadav had blocked the decision of former Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal 'Prachanda' to sack Army chief R Katawal.

Making it clear that India was not responsible for the political crisis in Nepal, Sharma said the present situation there has been created because of breakdown of consensus among parties which needs to be rebuilt.

"We wish Nepal and its people well. We hope they will be able to work together and take the process of democratic transition and peace-building to logical conclusion," he said.

Sharma also attacked BJP for alleging that developments in Nepal showed "abject failure" of the UPA government's policy, saying "It is not good thing to politicise sensitive foreign policy issues".

Dubbing BJP's charge as "irresponsible observation", he underlined that Government of India "is neither responsible for the current situation in Nepal nor to be faulted for engaging constructively with the neighbours." PTI
